Chi-Square Test: Analysis of Contingency Tables
نویسنده
چکیده
The original chi-square test, often known as Pearson’s chi-square, dates from papers by Karl Pearson in the earlier 1900s. The test serves both as a ”goodnessof-fit” test, where the data are categorized along one dimension, and as a test for the more common ”contingency table”, in which categorization is across two or more dimensions. Voinov and Nikulin, this volume, discuss the controversy over the correct form for the goodness of fit test. This entry will focus on the lack of agreement about tests on contingency tables. In 2000 the Vermont State legislature approved a bill authorizing civil unions. The vote can be broken down by gender to produce the following table, with the expected frequencies given in parentheses. The expected frequencies are computed as Ri × Cj/N, where Ri and Cj represent row and column marginal totals and N is the grand total.

A Test of Quasi-independence in Ordinal Triangular Contingency Tables
A new procedure for testing quasi-independence in an ordinal triangular contingency table is proposed as a generalization of Pearson's chi square test. The test is asymptotically equivalent in terms of power to the corresponding restricted likelihood ratio test for contiguous alternatives. Numerical results are also included in this study.
متن کاملInformation Identities and Testing Hypotheses: Power Analysis for Contingency Tables
An information theoretic approach to the evaluation of 2 x 2 contingency tables is proposed. By investigating the relationship between the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the maximum likelihood estimator, information identities are established for testing hypotheses, in particular, testing independence. These identities not only validate the calibration of p values, but also yield unified power...
متن کاملThe Application of Canonical Correlation to Two-Dimensional Contingency Tables
Almost every elementary statistics textbook has some coverage of the chi-square test (e. g., Comrey & Lee, 2007, Kirk, 2007, Howell, 2002). In particular, the chi-square test is presented in the analysis of categorical data. Most of these textbooks will take the reader up to the contingency table that involves the cross tabulation of two categorical variables. With contingency tables, there are...
متن کاملThe Use and Misuse of Chi-Square: Lewis and Burke Revisited
The proper use of Karl Pearson's chi-square for the analysis of contingency tables is reviewed. The 1949 article by Lewis and Burke, who cited nine sources of error in the use of chi-square, is updated. Research on the application of the chi-square statistic is examined and supplementary and alternative approaches are discussed. Emphasis is placed on techniques that are of use to the practicing...
